Magnetically collimated jets with high mass flux

چکیده

Recent numerical simulations and analytical models of magnetically collimated plasma outflows from a uniformly rotating central gravitating object and/or a Keplerian accretion disk have shown that relatively low mass and magnetic fluxes reside in the produced jet. Observations however indicate that in some cases, as in jets of YSO’s, the collimated outflow carries higher fluxes than these simulations predict. A solution to this problem is proposed here by assuming that jets with high mass flux originate in a central source which produces a noncollimated outflow provided that this source is surrounded by a rapidly rotating accretion disk. The relatively faster rotating disk produces a collimated wind which then forces all the enclosed outflow from the central source to be collimated too. This conclusion is confirmed by self-consistent numerical solutions of the full set of the MHD equations.

Magnetohydrodynamic Origin of Jets from Accretion Disks

A review is made of recent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory and simulations of origin of jets from accretion disks. Many compact astrophysical objects emit powerful, highly-collimated, oppositely directed jets. Included are the extra galactic radio jets of active galaxies and quasars, and old compact stars in binaries, and emission line jets in young stellar objects. It is widely thought that t...

Plasma tubes becoming collimated as a result of magnetohydrodynamic pumping

Collimated magnetized plasma structures are commonly observed on galactic, stellar, and laboratory scales. The Caltech plasma gun produces magnetically driven plasma jets bearing a striking resemblance to astrophysical jets and solar coronal loops by imposing boundary conditions analogous to those plasmas. This paper presents experimental observations of gun-produced plasma jets that support a ...

Relativistic Jets in Active Galactic Nuclei

This review discusses the basic characteristics of the jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN). It concentrates on the highly relativistic variety found in blazars, since these are the closest cousins to the jets seen in some X-ray binaries (microquasars) and the collimated, ultra-fast flows inferred to exist in gamma ray bursts. The fastest AGN jets are gamma-ray bright, with flow Lorentz factors...

Magnetic Jets from Swirling Disks

A broad swathe of astrophysical phenomena, ranging from tubular planetary nebulae through Herbig-Haro objects, radio-galaxy and quasar emissions to gamma-ray bursts and perhaps high-energy cosmic rays, may be driven by magnetically-dominated jets emanating from accretion disks. We give a self-contained account of the analytic theory of non-relativistic magnetically dominated jets wound up by a ...

Launching of Poynting Jets from Accretion Disks

The jets observed to emanate from many compact accreting objects may arise from the twisting of the magnetic field threading a differentially rotating accretion disk which acts to magnetically extract angular momentum and energy from the disk. Two main regimes have been discussed, hydromagnetic outflows, which have a significant mass flux and have energy and angular momentum carried by both mat...
